SEO in the age of AI answers: what GEO actually changes

Buyers increasingly ask AI assistants instead of scrolling search results. Generative Engine Optimisation is the discipline of being cited in those answers — here's what it does and doesn't change.

When a buyer asks an AI assistant for a recommendation, there is no page two. You're either in the answer or you don't exist. That's the shift behind Generative Engine Optimisation — and it's less mysterious than the acronym suggests.

What doesn't change

AI assistants are built on the same web Google indexes. Technical health, clear structure, genuine expertise and earned authority remain the raw material. A site that search engines can't crawl is a site AI can't cite. GEO builds on SEO; it never replaces it.

What actually changes

  • Answers over articles: content structured around direct, evidenced answers to specific questions gets cited; keyword-targeted filler gets ignored
  • Entities over keywords: machines need unambiguous signals about who you are — consistent naming, structured data, a clear specialism
  • Citations over rankings: the goal shifts from position one to being the source an assistant quotes

The honest caveats

Nobody can guarantee AI outputs, and anyone selling certainty here is selling smoke. What can be measured is presence: systematically testing how assistants answer the questions your buyers ask, and tracking whether you appear over time.

Where to start

Audit your current AI visibility before changing anything. Test twenty questions your buyers genuinely ask across the major assistants, note who gets cited and why, then close the gaps with structure and evidence. It's engineering applied to reputation — which is exactly how we treat it.
